To ensure the safe and efficient running of the University, it is crucial to control and keep traffic moving on campus. Everyone who parks on the UC Berkeley campus must obey posted parking signs.  Signs are posted at the campus entrances and at the entrance to each parking location.  Parking rules and regulations are enforced seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including holidays.

Permit Parking

A valid parking permit for the area is required in all University parking areas including central campus, faculty staff, and student lots. Vehicles not displaying a valid parking permit for the area are subject to citation.

Public Parking

Payment of hourly parking fees is required in all UC public parking spaces.  Public parking is either pay by space number or pay and display of a valid dispensing machine ticket.  Vehicles parked in spaces that have expired time in pay by space lots, or parked without proper display of a valid dispensing machine ticket in pay and display lots are subject to citation.

  • Most lots are available for paid public parking after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends..
  • All lots are closed from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Citations

All citations indicate the violation and fine amount on the citation. Citation recipients have 21 calendar days to either pay or contest the citation.

Towing and Vehicle Immobilization

If you block pedestrian or vehicular traffic, University parking regulations require that your vehicle be towed.

Vehicles that are observed repeatedly parking in violation of parking rules and regulations are subject to immobilization (booting) or towing.

Vehicles that have been issued 5 or more citations that are unpaid by thirty days or more are subject to immobilization (booting) or towing. If booted for 5 or more outstanding citations, the vehicle will remain booted for forty-eight hours.  If outstanding citations are not paid within forty-eight hours, the vehicle will be towed at the owner's expense and will remain stored until all outstanding citations and towing and storage fees are paid.

Vehicles that are towed may be released to the registered owner upon payment of fees, including tow and storage fees to the towing agency.

If your car has been towed on campus, contact UCPD at (510) 642-6760.

Personal checks are not accepted for payment of citations or fees related to vehicles which have been immobilized or towed.  Acceptable forms or payment include cash, check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover).
