Baypass has Passed!
The BayPass Referendum was overwhelmingly approved in the 2025 ASUC Elections with 90% “Yes” votes. Starting in Fall 2025, the Clipper BayPass will give unlimited access to all bus, rail, and ferry services across the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. BayPass covers AC Transit, BART, Muni, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, SF Bay Ferries, and 17 other transit agencies.
What is Baypass
-
An upgrade for Class Pass
-
Grants Students unlimited rides on 24 different transportation agencies
-
(BART, MUNI, AC Transit, SF Ferry)
-
Works across 9 Bay Area Counties
-
Costs $229 a semester
How Do I Get My Baypass?
-
New Students: You will receive a Clipper Card as part of your orientation package (or from your program department). Your BayPass will be pre-activated, so you can start using it immediately.
-
Continuing Students (with an AC Transit EasyPass): You do not need a new Clipper Card. In Fall 2025, simply tap your existing card on a Clipper Reader on any AC Transit bus; the BayPass will automatically load.
If you are an eligible UC Berkeley student, your BayPass is automatically loaded to your Clipper Card each semester, beginning one week before through one week after the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Spring enrollees can also use the BayPass throughout the summer.
Who Gets Access?
All undergraduate and graduate students pay a mandatory fee each semester, which includes the BayPass. However, the following programs are exempt:
-
MICS (Master of Information and Cybersecurity)
-
MIDS (Master of Information and Data Science) – includes 5th-year participants; undergraduates remain eligible
-
MASIC (Master of Advanced Study in Integrated Circuits)
-
OOMPH (Online Master of Public Health)
-
Hybrid-LLM (Master of Laws)
-
MSSE (Master of Molecular Science and Software)
Do I Still Have the AC Transit EasyPass?
Yes! The AC Transit EasyPass program remains in effect. The $124 BayPass fee is prorated to exclude AC Transit’s cost since the EasyPass is still active. The current EasyPass agreement ends in 2027, at which point UC Berkeley will explore merging the two programs.
How Much Does It Cost?
Each student pays a $229 Class Pass fee per semester. The breakdown is:
-
$124 for the BayPass (does not include AC Transit)
-
$48 for the AC Transit Student EasyPass
-
$22 for Bear Transit
-
$35 for the campus fee mandate supporting financial aid
Can I choose to have Class Pass or Baypass?
-
BayPass and Class Pass are not an opt-in or opt-out service
-
Baypass (an ASUC Ballot initiative passed April 2025), has upgraded students existing transit benefits to now include unlimited access on the 24 transit agencies that span the 9 counties of the Bay Area.
