The transition away from Paper BART tickets to Clipper Cards have been completed, according to BART. This results in eliminating the risks with COVID-19 with a touchless solution.
Using Clipper helps this effort by allowing riders to avoid direct contact with fare gates, as the card only needs to be held over the fare gate card reader without touching. Riders can further protect themselves from contact with fare machines by loading funds onto their Clipper card online, allowing up to one day for the balance to post.
Paper tickets may still be used if passengers still have them, in addition to utilizing the fare gates and the "add fare" mechanism upon leaving the system. Those without a paper ticket may obtain a Clipper Card through:
- Students: Your AC Transit Class Pass includes the capability to ride on 22 other Bay Area transit agencies by adding funds online or at BART stations. No additional cards are needed, but do register your card online in case of loss or theft.
- Employees: Either obtain a card at the nearest transit center or retailer. If you qualify, you may also obtain a card by purchasing through Wageworks (orders are due at 8pm on the 10th of every month).
- Residents (and students) may qualify for Clipper START, which allows for discounts on BART, MUNI, Caltrain, SF Ferry, and Marin Transit, and many others. Please note that upon successful application approval, you will be provided a second card in which you must carry with you.
