UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in the fifth annual California Clean Air Day on and leading up to October 5, 2022, as the annual event focuses on air quality, especially in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color, which are disproportionately impacted by poor air quality. Designed around individual actions, this statewide event allows millions of participants to take part via a simple, online pledge of at least one action that will help clean our air.

“San Francisco’s East Bay may be home to world-class institutions and well-known attractions” explained Dr. Joseph Lyou, President & CEO, Coalition for Clean Air. “But Alameda and Contra Costa Counties are home to many communities where poor air quality is a fact of life they experience on a year round basis. On Clean Air Day, businesses, government agencies, and individuals can all join in to make sure the benefits of breathing clean air can be shared by everyone.”

Clean Air Day is an accessible opportunity that allows for virtual and in-person participation, as well as the ability for businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations to sign up to engage their members, students, employees, and customers to encourage participation.

“The East Bay has had its challenges with air quality and unfortunately climate change is only making things worse” said Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert, “the good news is that there are things all of us can do to protect our health, improve air quality and lower our carbon footprint. On and leading up to California Clean Air Day, I want to encourage everyone to do at least one thing to make our lives and our planet just a little bit better.”

Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia added “California Clean Air Day has been an effective way to educate our communities on ways we can improve our air quality and protect our health, particularly in communities that are highly impacted by air pollution. Clean Air Day is about health and equity for all!”

Hosted by the Coalition for Clean Air with partners across the state, Clean Air Day is led locally by a diverse group of government, business and nonprofit representatives. Air pollution disproportionately impacts the health of people of color, low-income communities, and those who are sick, very young, or very old.
