UC Berkeley Named Gold Bicycle Friendly University

November 14, 2017

The League of American Bicyclists recognized UC Berkeley with a Gold Bicycle Friendly UniversitySM (BFUSM) award, joining more than 180 visionary colleges and universities from across the country. With this announcement, the campus has improved its ranking since 2013 when it was awarded a "Silver" award.

With 46 new and renewing BFUs today, UC Berkeley joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities across the United States that are transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 182 Bicycle Friendly Universities in 45 states and Washington, D.C., including 20 Gold and 5 Platinum campuses.

The percentage of people riding a bike to UC Berkeley has increased by nearly 50% since 2013, supporting the campus and University's greenhouse reduction goals and reducing parking demand. Parking & Transportation encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as secure bike parking, discounted FordGoBike share memberships and programs such as the new electric bike share program at University Village Albany. In partnership with the City of Berkeley, new protected bike lanes are under construction on two sides of campus, making the campus edge an easier and safer place to bike into the campus.
