Transportation Fund for Clean Air Grant: Working to Promote Alternate Transportation

Starting in July of 2005, the Parking & Transportation department implemented a comprehensive marketing and outreach campaign, which targeted student, faculty, and staff populations to encourage shifts from driving alone to using commute alternatives.

The outreach, headed by transportation planner Kira Stoll, marketing manager Kendall Moalem, and interns Alicia Arellano and Albertina Thai, has been a great success. The TFCA grant team has released three on-line newsletters, maintained student and employee email list serves, re-designed the transportation alternatives web site, and launched a Pass Along the Bear Pass campaign which resulted in a 30% increase in faculty/staff bus pass holders.

As the grant period comes to a close, we would like to thank everyone who participated in our campus outreach or referred friends to our alternative transportation programs. Please continue to promote alternative transportation by staying updated via our website.

Five Reasons to Bike to Work

Bike to Work Day is approaching quickly! Thursday, May 18, 2006 is Bike to Work Day. May is National Bike Month, so celebrate the joy of biking to work by visiting our energizer stations, participating in our bicycle buddies program, and enjoying free bicycle parking. For more information, visit the regional Bike to Work Day web page or P&T's Bike to Work web page.

Now, here are five reasons to bike to work, courtesy of Traffic Solutions:

  1. Bicycling is excellent exercise and can improve your health! In fact, a twenty-minute bicycle commute, at a moderate speed, can burn 280 calories round trip!
  2. Reduce the amount of air pollutants your commute contributes. Even if your commute is only five miles each way, your car emits over one hundred pounds of air pollution each year.
  3. Many bicycle commuters report feeling refreshed and invigorated when they arrive at work.
  4. Bicycle commuting is quick. Many people can comfortably cycle five miles in twenty minutes. On your bike, you'll get to work in quick time!
  5. Bicycling is one of the least expensive ways to get to work. Upkeep and maintenance of bicycles is cheap and the only fuel needed is food!

No Permits, No Parking Tickets!

With the permit renewal period approaching, it’s a great time to reassess your commute methods. If you’re tired of driving to work, consider taking public transportation! P&T offers unlimited AC Transit rides for faculty and staff if they purchase a Bear Pass at a discounted monthly cost. Visit 511.org and plan your commute using the TakeTransit Trip Planner. Consider joining a carpool or vanpool and find commute partners through the RideMatch service.

For more ideas on how to accomplish your daily commute, please visit our website.
