Car Sharing at UC Berkeley
About Car Sharing
UC Berkeley has a variety of car sharing services on, or just adjacent to campus—City CarShare, Flexcar and Zipcar—plus one short-term rental service—Enterprise Rent-a-Car. Each service provides its members with short-term car rentals.
Car sharing fits perfectly in a University setting. The services of these agencies allow access to a car for such things as grocery runs and errands— without the burden of owning, insuring, parking, and maintaining a vehicle. Students, who typically have tight budgets and very limited parking options, benefit from easy access to a vehicle on campus when they need it, while for staff and faculty, car sharing can solve the problem of needing a second vehicle or access to a car at work even if the primary commute is made via transit, carpools, or other alternative modes. This alternative to car ownership can support a green decision not to own a car at all.
The vehicles are conveniently located on-campus as well as the City of Berkeley and throughout the region. Each car sharing service offers its own unique fee structure, eligibility requirements and philosophies. Check each of them out and choose the one that suits your needs.
If you usually commute using alternative transportation methods such as BART, bus, or bicycle, you may be eligible for New Directions Program Occasional Use permits for campus parking in certain lots. Call the P&T office for more info.
