Parking & Transportation's mission is to serve the campus community, and enforcement action is taken when necessary to ensure that parking rules and regulations are obeyed for the safety and convenience of all commuters. Citation fines

Fines for UC Parking & Transportation citations are listed on the reverse side of the citation.

Paying Citations

Pay or contest a citation within 21 calendar days of issuance will avoid an additional $54.00 late fee, negative impact on obtaining/renewing your campus parking permit and DMV registration. There are three ways to pay a citation.

• On-Line via e-parking
  • Citations will be available for online payment 24 hours after the date of issuance. You must have:
    • Citation number or Vehicle License plate
    • Valid credit card
    • Valid e-address
    • A working printer. You will be required to print a receipt at the end of the transaction
    • "Cookies" enabled on your browser (in the "Preference or Internet Options" menu)
• By mail before the 21-day deadline. You may pay by mail to the address on the citation.

Towing/vehicle immobilization

University parking policies and regulations require the towing of parked vehicles that impede pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Vehicles may also be towed or immobilized (also known as booting) for repeatedly violating University parking regulations or for unpaid citation fines. Vehicles with five or more unpaid parking citations may be towed or immobilized. Vehicles will be released when the citations and a boot-release fee are paid. Booted vehicles will be towed after having been booted more than 48 hours. Pay your parking tickets--avoid the boot!

Why Issue Citations?  

Parking Citations are a universally accepted method of ensuring authorized parking. In the case of UC Berkeley, vehicles parking on University property become authorized when displaying the appropriate campus permit. Vehicles not displaying such permits are cited for failure to display the appropriate permit, and pay a fine that discourages future violation. Citations are also issued for parking in areas not designated for parking, and for specific types of parking violations such as the illegal use of disabled parking spaces, blocking access, etc.

Parking Citations simultaneously discourage scofflaw parking so that those who need access to the parking have a better opportunity to obtain it. Parking operations on UC campuses are business enterprises (like housing and athletics), charged with recovering from users the costs of operations, capital development, and debt service. Without parking enforcement and citation issuance, parking on the Berkeley campus would be filled with those who are not contributing to that system and already limited access would be even more difficult.

Use of Citation Revenues

The use of revenues from Parking citations on UC campuses is governed under the State educational code. Those funds cannot be used to build parking, but they can cover the costs of enforcement. Residual funds may be used to advance alternate transportation use. The Berkeley campus uses its citation revenue to fund the operation of the campus shuttle bus operations that connect BART and the downtown bus services to the campus.

Disabled Parking Policy   (No campus "DP" permit as of May 2006)

• Blue DP spaces are reserved in campus lots for people with state-issued disability placard/license plate, but those credentials must be displayed along with a campus-issued regular parking permit to avoid citation.
• Persons with disabilities shall use the same process to obtain a permit to park on campus property as all other members of the Cal community. Purchase a permit according to your affilliation (Faculty/Staff, Student, etc.).

Other circumstances

• The California State placard is honored in marked campus DP spaces only in conjunction with campus-issued parking permits OR with payment in a campus garage or lot offering hourly or event parking.
• Disabled campus visitors who do not currently possess a California State placard and who require special parking arrangements should contact the Disability Resolution Officer by phone at (510) 642-2795 or by email at esc@berkeley.edu prior to arriving on campus.

Overnight Parking Policy November 2006

For Central Campus "C" and Faculty / Staff "F" Annual Permit Holders:

There is no fee to park overnight. However, the permit holder must be parked in the appropriate lot or space as directed by all control signs. It is the driver’s responsibility to not only park according to the time of day at which they park, but be responsible for the whole time the vehicle will be in that space and/or lot. It is the permit holder’s responsibility to make sure that a lot has not been reserved for an event while they are away from campus and parked in such lot.

For Student "S" Permit Holders, Temporary Permit Availability:

Students that need to park overnight for campus related purposes, such as a class trip, must have written authorization from their department to be allowed to purchase a Temporary Permit for the time frame they will be away from campus. They will be allowed to park in "S" lots with a Temporary Permit. The cost of Temporary Permit is $5.00 for "S" holders and $8.00 for students who have no permit.

For Residence Hall "RH" Permit Holders:

Residence Hall permit holders will be allowed to park in the appropriate lots overnight without additional charge if they are in compliance with all control signs.

For other permit holders:

Overnight scratch-offs are available for an additional rate of $5.00 per night for those individuals who may need one. For example, a normal carpool person who is going out of town on campus business for one night and needs to drive their car. They would purchase an overnight scratch-off that would cost the day rate and the overnight fee of $5.00.
