Underhill Parking Facility

Project Background

Beginning Monday, August 29, 2005, construction will begin on the replacement parking project at the current Underhill site between Channing Way and Haste Street at College Avenue, including a new sports field on the top level.

Construction will continue on the parking structure through January 2007, and the entire facility is scheduled for completion by the end of the spring semester 2007. The replacement structure will have 1,000 marked parking spaces, accommodating short-term parking, the disabled, departmental parking, and residence hall parking, as well as student, faculty, and staff permit holders.

In 1991-92, after the Loma Prieta earthquake, the campus determined that the existing parking structure at the Underhill site was structurally unsound, and had it torn down. Since then, the campus has been planning to restore the structure and field.

Construction of the Underhill parking helps to fulfill the campus’s commitment to improve vehicle access, made when parking rates were increased several years ago. The opening of the Lower Hearst addition (Level 4 parking) was another part of that effort, while the newly completed parking facility in Wellman courtyard replaces parking removed for construction of the Chang-Lin Tien East Asian Library.

The replacement project and all campus parking projects are part of the Berkeley campus balanced approach to access. This approach includes pre-tax AC Transit bus passes for Faculty and Staff (Bear Pass program), the 3 million-plus student rides per year on AC Transit through the Class Pass program, BearTransit shuttle service from the downtown Berkeley BART station, over 1,000 participants in campus carpools, organized bicycle use and support, and nearby student housing within walking distance.

Parking Impacts for Current Users around the Campus

The construction of the Underhill replacement structure and the planned construction of a new child-care center at the Ellsworth structure will affect almost 340 parking spaces in the campus parking system. Finding parking in the same area as these lots will be more difficult. Parking & Transportation has developed alternatives to mitigate the impact of these losses, but cannot totally eliminate that impact. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use their Bear Passes and Class Passes, BART, bicycles, and other forms of transportation as much as circumstances permit. For information about campus transit options, please visit our website's Transportation Alternatives section. Other mitigation efforts include increased attendant parking, re-designation of some parking areas, and negotiated access for additional parking.
