West Campus Parking Update - Alternate Parking for CLOSED LOTS
(Optometry, Stadium, Stadium West and I-House Lots)
At the direction of UCPD, fencing has been installed to fully enclose the
area adjacent to the west side of California Memorial Stadium. Some time
in the coming weeks a judge will rule on whether or not the University can
begin construction on the new Student Athlete High Performance Center. The
campus has decided that once a decision is reached, with everyone having
had their day in court, it will be time to bring the illegal occupation of
University property to an end. If the people in the trees continue to
violate the law, ignore court orders and reject requests to come down
voluntarily, the area will be fully secured so that the law can be
enforced.
Access to campus parking lots is expected to be affected in advance of the
judge's decision. Permit holders who usually use the Kleeberger,
Optometry, Stadium, Stadium West and I-House parking lots will need to park
in alternate campus lots. The duration and extent of the disruption to
normal parking procedures will depend, to a large extent, on how the judge
rules and/or the situation on the ground.
If UCPD closes any of the parking lots without providing advance
notification, anyone parked in the lots will be able to leave. Suggested
alternate parking sites may be subject to change based upon operational
needs.
If the court ruling is such that the campus is allowed to proceed with
construction of the Student Athlete High Performance Center, a specific
site plan will be developed for construction that may look different to
what has been put in place recently. The campus community will have
advance notice of any changes expected for construction staging and once
implemented, the changes would be in place for many months.
Below are answers to some frequently asked questions:
(Big thanks to Gerardo Campos at the Haas School of Business for putting
this FAQ together!)
1. Where should I park if Kleeberger and Stadium Lots are closed?
There are a number of campus parking lots in the area, including the
Whitter lot east of Memorial Stadium and Upper Hearst near the intersection
of Hearst and Gayley. A campus parking map that shows all lots and the
permits accepted at each is available at
http://pt.berkeley.edu/PDFs/PadMap2005.pdf.
In addition to lots that you may be familiar with, the NEW Underhill
parking structure is open on College Ave between Channing Way and Haste
Street. Underhill provides almost 1,000 covered parking spaces for campus
permit holders (C, F and S are all accepted). The structure is fully
accessible, well-lit, well-ventilated and provides ample parking on four
levels.
2. Is transportation available to Underhill?
Parking & Transportation has added a Reverse perimeter (the R-line) shuttle
stop at Underhill. The shuttle goes up Durant and north on Piedmont Ave,
stopping near the I-House, Boalt, Haas School of Business and East Gate.
The shuttle is free to campus affiliates holding a current campus ID and $1
for all others. It will stop on the Channing side of the Underhill parking
approximately every 24 minutes. Please see route schedule for a complete
listing of stop times at http://pt.berkeley.edu/transportation_alternatives/beartransit/R-Line/index.
The P-line (Perimeter) shuttle returns to Underhill from the central campus by going south on Piedmont and west on Bancroft. There is no stop on the P-line at the Underhill parking lot. Passengers should get off at the
College Avenue stop and walk to Underhill.
3. How long does it take to walk to Underhill?
It takes about 10-15 minutes depending on your pace to walk from Underhill
to the Haas School of Business.
After dark, the Bear Walk service is available to anyone who would like to be escorted by a uniformed, radio-equipped and trained student employee of
UCPD. The Community Service Officers (CSOs) provide a walking escort in
conjunction with the Night Safety Shuttle for those going to nearby
residences, public transportation or parking facilities during the evening
hours. The service is available to all. To request an escort, call
642-WALK (9255) when you need the escort (advanced reservations not
accepted).
4. Are Campus Parking maps available?
Printed campus maps are available at the Parking & Transportation
storefront offices at 2150 Kittredge Street. They are also available
online at http://pt.berkeley.edu/formsandpublications/index.htm.
An online version of the parking map that is easier to print is in the works.
5. What about disabled parking?
Campus permit holders with State DP permits and license plates should go to
other disabled parking spaces in the area, which are available on a
first-come, first-served basis. There are spaces in the small lot behind
2222 Piedmont, in front of Minor Hall and in the Boalt lot. A map showing
disabled parking spaces and the accessible entrances to campus buildings is
available online at FASDI, a campus collection of facilities and space
data. You need a Cal Net ID to have access to this part of FASDI:
http://fasdi.berkeley.edu/Data/Gateway/index.cfm
6. Who can I contact with questions?
Please contact Christine Shaff in UC Berkeley Facilities Services with any
questions at 643-4793 or cshaff@berkeley.edu.
Haas School of Business community members can also contact Gerardo Campos,
Manager, Facilities and Building Operations at 642-4617 or
