Commute Planning for BART Strike

BART unions have announced a possible strike starting Wednesday, July 6, 2005 unless a labor settlement is reached. Negotiations occurred throughout the holiday weekend and are continuing. Approximately 750 UC Berkeley employees commute by BART daily and will need to find alternate means to commute to work.

The Parking & Transportation Department (P&T) is prepared to implement the following strategies to accommodate displaced BART riders. To ease the inconvenience caused by the strike, we have added parking resources and offer a variety of transit options for commuters to consider as alternatives to riding BART.

P&T services

The Parking & Transportation office at 2150 Kittredge st is open late on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., for customers’ advance purchases of transit and parking passes. We are also available by phone at (510) 643-7701 to answer your questions and help direct you to the best alternative to simplify your commute during the strike.

Commute Resources

BART service and strike updates can be found at the BART website.

AC Transit
Routes, schedules and news updates for the east bay’s bus system, including the TakeTransit trip planning tool are online at AC Transit's website.

511 is a free phone and Web service that consolidates Bay Area transportation information into a one-stop resource. 511 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has added a special web section for BART strike updates. This service provides up-to-the-minute information on traffic conditions, accidents, driving times, and information on Bay Area public transportation services such as instant carpool and vanpool referrals, bicycling information and more. Visit 511.org online or call 511.

Alternative Transportation

Consider commuting via bus. Ten AC transit lines service the UC Berkeley campus and P&T sells seven AC Transit ticket types at standard prices, as well as the Bear Pass which allows Bear Pass holders unlimited AC Transit bus rides for just $20 per month. Visit the AC Transit website for trip planning, map, and schedule information, and P&T's Bear Pass page for program details.

Form a carpool. Visit 511.org or call 511 to find carpool partners using the regional Ridematch tool. Join with fellow commuters to take advantage of freeway “high-occupancy vehicle” (HOV) lanes. BART will make all 32 of its parking lots available for carpool parking in the event of a strike.

Bicycle commute. Campus bike maps are available online. Find bike maps and resources for the City of Berkeley on the city's bicycle web page.
Printed versions can also be picked up at the P&T office. Further bike-related resources can be found at 511.org.

Ride BearTransit. P&T will supplement its BearTransit service during the strike, to facilitate travel between parking lots and campus. The R line runs counter-clockwise around the campus perimeter, and will increase service to 12-minute intervals from 7 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Visit our BearTransit web page for schedules.

Parking on Campus

While P&T discourages unnecessary car commuting to campus, we are confident that we can accommodate increased parking traffic that may result from the strike. Parking lot capacities during the summer months will absorb an increase in parking traffic due to BART customers who may drive in to work. In the event that one of our attended lots (Dana/Durant, Upper Hearst levels 2 & 3, University Hall structure levels 1 & 3) becomes full, P&T on-site staff will direct customers to another attended lot with space available. F (Faculty/Staff) & C (Central Campus) permits are honored in S (Student) lots during summer months through August 22nd and the following lots tend to have more space available:
• North side: Lower Hearst lot accommodates C parking permits on level 1, and F permits on levels 3 & 4.
• Northeast side: Stadium Rimway, Prospect Court, Stadium and Foothill lots.
• South side: Ellsworth structure, Anna Head West and Underhill lots.

Parking Permits
P&T will honor Dispensing Machine Tickets (DMTs) in F & S lots for those affiliates not possessing an annual or daily hangtag permit. Purchase DMTs for $7 for daily parking at the lot machine (select correct DMT by using the yellow button). Find out where to park using the Campus Parking Map on our website.

Discounted Occasional Use Parking Permits
Faculty & staff who commute by alternate transit are eligible to purchase 48 days of discount parking a year at the P&T office. Occasional Use daily “F” permits cost $6 a day, and those eligible for “C” parking pay $10. Permits are sold individually, so customers can purchase any number in a visit up to the annual limit. Once participants exhaust the 48 days of discounted parking, they are eligible to purchase daily parking at standard rates.
